Combined Manicure

Combined Manicure

How clean is clean enough? Most manicures stop at the surface — the cuticle is pushed back, not properly cleared, and the side walls are left untouched. The combined manicure works both zones with scissors and an electric file, each tool applied where it performs best, so the cuticle margin is genuinely clean and the finish bonds properly from the start. The procedure is available at our South Kensington and Oxford Circus salons.

What Is a Combi Manicure?

The combined manicure brings together two techniques that each do something the other cannot. The trimming element uses scissors or nippers to address harder, more resistant cuticle growth — the kind that builds up at the sides of the nail and doesn’t lift cleanly with an electric file alone. The machine element follows, using rotating bits to refine the nail plate surface, remove fine skin along the cuticle margin, and buff to an even finish. The sequence matters: trim first where the tissue is thick, file where precision is needed.

The result is a cleaner cuticle line than either technique produces on its own, and a nail surface that accepts gel or shellac more evenly. Clients who have tried both the pure machine manicure and the combined approach often find the combi works better for nails with coarser cuticle growth or lateral fold buildup — conditions where the electric file has limits. All instruments used in the scissor stage are sterilised in a hot oven and opened in front of the client in sealed packaging.

Sessions run from 60 to 90 minutes depending on nail condition and whether colour is added. A shellac nail treatment applied after the combined prep holds particularly well because the surface and cuticle margin have both been addressed properly. For clients who want the full hand treatment, the session can be extended to include paraffin therapy or a hand and arm massage alongside the nail extension service if length is also being added.

How the Manicure Combo Is Performed at PIED-DE-POULE

01
Consultation

Your technician assesses the nail shape, cuticle thickness, and condition of the nail plate before deciding the sequence and depth of each stage. Any history of sensitivity, recent gel removal, or nail damage is discussed here.

02
Sanitisation

The working area and the client's hands are treated with a disinfectant before any tools are used. Scissor instruments are opened from sealed sterilised packaging at this point.

03
Nail Shaping

The technician files or clips the nails to the chosen length and shape – square, oval, almond, or round – before cuticle work begins. Shaping first means the cuticle margin is assessed in proportion to the final nail form.

04
Cuticle Work

Scissors or nippers address thick or built-up cuticle growth at the sides and base of the nail. The electric file follows, removing finer dead skin along the margin and refining the zone around each nail without cutting living tissue.

05
Buffing and Plate

Prep A polishing attachment smooths the nail plate surface, removing ridges and evening the texture. This is the final prep stage before colour or a natural finish is applied.

06
Finish and Aftercare

Gel, shellac, or a nourishing oil and buff finish is applied. Before the client leaves, the technician covers post-session care – cuticle oil use, what to avoid in the first hour with gel, and the recommended interval before the next appointment.

Why Choose Combi Manicure

combi manicure
  • CUTICLE PRECISION

Trimming removes thick or resistant cuticle growth at the sides and base of the nail that an electric file cannot lift cleanly, leaving a margin that looks defined for longer.

  • NAIL PLATE REFINEMENT

The electric file stage smooths ridges and levels the nail surface after trimming, creating a base that bonds evenly with gel or polish and reduces edge lifting.

  • EXTENDED WEAR TIME

Gel and shellac applied over a properly prepared nail – clean cuticle margin, buffed plate – adhere more completely and last two to three weeks without significant lifting.

  • SKIN INTEGRITY

The combination approach means each tool is used only where it performs safely – scissors on resistant tissue, file on the plate – reducing the risk of micro-damage from forcing a single method across all zones.

FAQ

  • What is the difference between a combined and regular manicure?

The combined manicure adds a scissor or nipper stage for thicker cuticle growth that an electric file handles less cleanly. The regular manicure is fully dry and file-only – better suited to finer cuticle tissue.

  • Does the scissor stage hurt?

No, when performed correctly it should be painless. The nippers or scissors address only dead skin – not living tissue – and the technician assesses thickness before choosing tool and depth.

  • How long does a session take?

A combined manicure without colour takes around 60 minutes. With gel or shellac added, allow 75 to 90 minutes. Extended appointments including paraffin or additional hand treatment run longer and are discussed at booking.

  • How often should I book?

Most clients return every two to three weeks. The cuticle margin and nail growth rate are the main factors – your technician can recommend an interval based on your nails after the first session.

  • Can I book a combined manicure if I currently have gel on my nails?

Yes – gel removal can be added to the appointment. Mention this when booking so the correct time is allocated.

  • Is the combined manicure suitable for short or damaged nails?

Yes. The technician adjusts the approach based on nail length and plate condition. Damaged or very thin nails are worked more conservatively, using lighter pressure and finer attachments on the file stage.
